SERDANG, 20 Jun 2025 - The Intellectual Property Talk titled “From Lab to Market: Generating Income Through Intellectual Property” was successfully organized by the ION2 Postgraduate Club in conjunction with National Training Week (NTW) 2025. Held virtually through Google Meet, this program aimed to raise awareness among postgraduate students and researchers regarding the importance of managing and protecting intellectual property (IP), as well as the potential of transforming research findings into commercial products.
The main objectives of the program were to provide insight into intellectual property management, encourage researchers to consider commercialization opportunities, and inspire entrepreneurial thinking within the academic environment. The talk began with welcoming remarks by the emcee, followed by an opening speech from Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid, Director of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2). The invited speaker for the session was Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Saiful Hasley Ramli, an expert in innovation and technology transfer.
Dr. Saiful delivered an engaging and informative session divided into three parts. The first session focused on the fundamentals and relevance of IP in research, while the second session provided real- life examples and strategic approaches to commercialization. The final session was a Q&A segment where participants actively engaged with the speaker, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their views on innovation and IP protection.
Overall, the program was well-received by almost 70 participants, with many expressing their appreciation for the practical knowledge shared. The talk successfully broadened participants’ perspectives on how intellectual property can serve as a bridge between academic research and real-world applications. It also emphasized the value of moving research “from lab to market,” encouraging a culture of innovation and impact among young researchers at ION2.
