ION2 Annual Workshop: Printed Electronics – Fabrication and Application in Nanotechnology (PEFAN2025)

SERDANG, 6 August - The PEFAN2025 Workshop was successfully held on 5 and 6 August 2025 at the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), bringing together researchers, academicians, industry experts, and government representatives for two days of learning, hands-on activities, and industrial exposure focused on printed electronics applications related to nanotechnology.

The first day started with a talk on "Introduction to the Thick Film Technology and its growing role in printed electronics" by Prof. Dr. Mohd Nizar Hamidon. Participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles and cutting-edge applications of this field. The morning hands-on session was followed by allowing attendees to prepare thick film pastes themselves using nanomaterial-based formulations. After the lunch break, the afternoon session continued with a demonstration of a rheology measurement, which is crucial for evaluating paste flow behaviour properties. Later, participants experienced the screen-printing hands-on activities by applying their self-made pastes onto substrates for circuit printing.

Day two began with a technical visit to Khai Lien Sdn. Bhd., where participants explored the stencil-making production process, gaining real-world exposure to industrial practices in printed electronics. Later, the afternoon sessions at ION2 started with a demonstration on electrical conductivity measurement, key to assessing circuit performance. Finally, the workshop concluded with the completion of printed circuit hands-on, where participants experienced the actual application of printed electronics in the form of a simple printed circuit comprising a switch, LED, and battery connected by the printed lines using the prepared carbon paste as the connectors.

Participants came from a diverse background of universities, government agencies, and industrial sectors, allowing valuable cross-disciplinary engagement and collaboration, which was initiated throughout the workshop during discussions.

In conclusion, this 8th edition of PEFAN2025 was not only a platform to build technical skills but also an avenue to strengthen partnerships in advancing Malaysia’s capabilities in nanotechnology and printed electronics innovation.
