MELAKA, 22 October 2025 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was invited to the National Nanotechnology Programme (NanoKeb) 2025 Closing Ceremony, organised by the National Nanotechnology Centre (NNC), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), to celebrate the outstanding achievement of five Form Four students from Sekolah Menengah Sains Rembau (SEMESRA) who brought pride to the nation on the international stage.

ION2 was represented by its Director, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid, together with ION2 research officers Mr. Mohd Ali Mat Nong and Ts. Dr. Mohd Hafizuddin Abdul Rahman.

The SEMESRA students successfully won two gold medals and three bronze medals at the 1st International Nanotechnology Olympiad for High School (INOHS) 2025, an international-level competition organised online by the Iran Nano and Micro Technology Innovation Council (INIC). The competition, which involved participants from 18 countries, ran over three months and included a series of workshops and mentoring sessions. 

Malaysia’s participation in INOHS was coordinated by NNC MOSTI in collaboration with INIC and supported by ION2 UPM researchers through the knowledge transfer programme, NanoDidik, held in June this year. The initiative also received support from the Co-Curriculum and Arts Division (BSKK), Ministry of Education Malaysia.

Prof. Suraya expressed her appreciation to MOSTI, NNC, and the teachers of SEMESRA for their dedication, noting that the achievement reflects the success of collaborative efforts between government agencies, educational institutions, and universities in nurturing young talent in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
