Serdang, 28 November 2025 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully organised an online webinar entitled “From Bench to Field: Experiences in Synthetic Biology, Diagnostics, and On-Site Biomanufacturing.”

The webinar featured Associate Professor Keith Pardee from the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto, as the invited speaker. He is a recognised expert in synthetic biology, molecular diagnostics, and the development of field-deployable biomanufacturing technologies.

In his presentation, Associate Professor Pardee shared insights into the development of cell-free synthetic biology platforms and their applications in diagnostics. He highlighted how these technologies enable cost-effective, rapid, and portable diagnostic solutions, particularly in resource-limited settings.

He also shared experiences from the implementation of biomanufacturing technologies in Brazil and Colombia, highlighting their role in supporting public health responses, expanding access to biomedical technologies, and reducing dependence on centralized laboratory facilities.

The webinar attracted 30 participants, including researchers, postgraduate students, and academic staff. An interactive question-and-answer session followed, focusing on technical challenges, opportunities for international collaboration, and the future direction of synthetic biology and biomanufacturing technologies.

Overall, the webinar provided valuable insights into recent advances in synthetic biology and diagnostics, while strengthening research collaboration between Universiti Putra Malaysia and its international partners.
