SERDANG, 14 July 2026 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through the ION2 Lab Avengers innovation team, showcased SmartFlo – A Smart Solution for Laboratory Humidity Control Management during the final evaluation session of the UPM Laboratory Management Innovation Award held in conjunction with the UPM Quality and Service Innovation Day (HKIP) 2025/2026.
The team, comprising five ION2 officers including Science Officers and an Assistant Engineer, led by Mr. Md Ali Rani, developed SmartFlo as an innovative solution to address operational challenges related to condensate water management from dehumidifiers in laboratories.
Prior to the implementation of SmartFlo, the process of removing accumulated water from dehumidifier tanks required regular manual intervention by laboratory staff, particularly when the tanks reached full capacity, which could affect laboratory humidity control. Through this innovation, an automatic drainage system was introduced to channel condensate water directly into the laboratory drainage system, eliminating the need for continuous manual monitoring and handling.
SmartFlo also introduces a scheduled smart operation concept, enabling dehumidifiers to operate optimally even in the absence of laboratory personnel, including during extended holidays. This innovation not only helps maintain stable humidity conditions within laboratory environments but also reduces routine workload and minimises ergonomic risks associated with manual tank handling.
Through the transformation from a manual process to an automated system, SmartFlo demonstrates how creative and practical ideas can generate significant impact in improving laboratory operational efficiency. The innovation aligns with UPM’s aspiration towards strengthening laboratory management through efficient, sustainable and continuous improvement practices.
