PUTRAJAYA, Sept 29 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), was named the Best Institute/Academy of the Year 2024 at the Industry and Community Appreciation Ceremony (ICAN 2025) held here recently.

The prestigious recognition was awarded in acknowledgment of ION2’s excellence in strengthening strategic networks with industry and the community, as well as its continuous commitment to conducting impactful research and innovation that benefits society.

In addition to the main award, ION2’s strategic collaborators also received two significant recognitions at ICAN 2025, namely:

• The Best Industry Partner Award presented to Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in The Middle East (SESAME) through Assoc. Prof. Dr. Che Azurahanim Che Abdullah, Associate Researcher at ION2; and

• The Best Community Partner Award presented to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kajang Utama (SMK Kajang Utama) through the KTGS@ION2 project, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norizah Abdul Rahman, Associate Researcher at ION2.

Organised biennially by UPM, ICAN aims to recognise the contributions of industry and community partners, as well as members of the university, in strengthening strategic collaborations and expanding the impact of university research for the years 2023 and 2024.

Director of ION2, Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid, said the achievement reflects the dedication of the entire ION2 team in advancing and promoting the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology at UPM.

“This recognition highlights the strength of collaboration between ION2, its industry partners and community collaborators in conducting high-impact research that not only enhances the university’s reputation but also brings tangible benefits to society,” she said.

She also expressed her appreciation to all researchers and strategic partners for their continued support in empowering the nanoscience and nanotechnology research ecosystem in Malaysia.
