SERDANG, 27 August 2026 – The Membrane Workshop 2026, held on 26 and 27 August 2026, successfully brought together 13 participants from universities and industry to strengthen their knowledge and practical skills in advanced membrane technology.
The two-day workshop featured experts in membrane research, Dr Ebrahim Mahmoudi and Dr Chua Siew Fen, alongside Associate Professor Dr Norizah Abdul Rahman, an expert in electrospinning. Dr Ebrahim Mahmoudi, with more than 10 years of experience in membrane research, shared valuable insights into membrane development and applications.
The first day focused on membrane fundamentals, characterisation, selection strategies and transport mechanisms in porous, non-porous and liquid membranes. Participants also explored industrial processes such as reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, membrane preparation through phase inversion, and surface characterisation techniques including FESEM, EDX, AFM and XPS.
The theoretical knowledge was reinforced through a hands-on laboratory session, where participants gained practical experience in membrane fabrication.
On the second day, participants explored membrane modification and performance optimisation, including interfacial polymerisation mechanisms, followed by practical sessions on membrane modification and performance testing.
The workshop concluded with an introduction to electrospinning and a live equipment demonstration, providing participants with practical exposure to advanced membrane fabrication.
The positive feedback from participants highlighted the clarity of the presentations and the value of practical activities in connecting fundamental concepts with real-world applications.
