NPTL Hosts the Adjunct Professor Lecture 2025 Series 2: Carbon Quantum Dots in Catalysts

SERDANG, 21 July 2025 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), continues to drive innovation and knowledge sharing through the successful organization of the 2nd series of the Adjunct Professor Lecture 2025, hosted by the Nanomaterials Processing and Technology Laboratory (NPTL), ION2. This intellectual platform brought together 27 participants, both physically and virtually, to strengthen the exchange of expertise among researchers, academics, and students in the field of nanotechnology.

Held in a hybrid format, the event took place physically at the MEGA Putra Seminar Room and virtually via Google Meet. A total of 11 participants attended in person, while 16 joined online. The participants comprised UPM researchers and postgraduate students.

The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr. Chawalit Ngamcharussrivichai, an Adjunct Professor at NPTL, who presented on the topic “Carbon Quantum Dots in Catalyst”. In his lecture, Professor Chawalit elaborated on the unique properties of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), their synthesis methods, and their applications in enhancing the efficiency of catalysts for more sustainable chemical reactions.

He also highlighted the potential of CQDs as environmentally friendly materials that can be synthesized from biomass-derived carbon sources. Their nanoscale size, chemical stability, and high luminescence make CQDs suitable for various catalytic systems, including heterogeneous and photocatalysis. He further shared his latest research findings demonstrating CQDs’ ability to improve selectivity and catalytic efficiency, with significant implications for renewable energy and green chemical processing.

The primary objective of this lecture series is to foster a culture of interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and to expose researchers and students to the latest technological advances in nanotechnology research. Professor Chawalit noted that the active participation of attendees reflects a strong interest in the exploration and advancement of carbon quantum dot research.

Adding value to the smooth conduct of the program, the session was effectively moderated by Ts. Dr. Umer Rashid, a Research Fellow at ION2. His role ensured a well-organized and seamless session, contributing to a meaningful and structured learning experience for all attendees.

The lecture concluded with an engaging interactive Q\&A session, where participants exchanged ideas and sought deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities surrounding CQD-based catalyst research. Participants expressed their appreciation for ION2 and NPTL’s initiative in providing such a high-impact platform, which broadens the horizon for future research undertakings.
