UPM’s Photosynthesis 2.0 Gains Global Spotlight as Better World Project Award Finalist

Serdang, January 2026 — Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), has achieved significant international recognition as one of its flagship innovations, Photosynthesis 2.0: From UPM Research to a Global Agritech Breakthrough, was named a finalist for the prestigious 2026 Better World Project Award by the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM).

The nominated innovation was developed from the research of Prof. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid, Director of ION2. The technology, commercialized as QarboGrow, represents a next-generation approach to enhancing photosynthesis efficiency in crops through the application of carbon quantum dots derived from natural agricultural waste. These nanoscale materials enable plants to convert unused ultraviolet light into photosynthetically active radiation, increasing the energy available for photosynthesis.

According to field studies, the application of QarboGrow has resulted in crop yield improvements of up to 30%, including under low-light and water-stressed conditions. Notably, the technology does not require changes to existing farming practices, allowing farmers to integrate it seamlessly into their current agricultural routines.

The successful transition of Photosynthesis 2.0 from research to real-world application was supported by UPM’s innovation and commercialisation ecosystem, leading to the establishment of Qarbotech as a university spin-off. Since its inception, the company has expanded its production capacity and market presence beyond Malaysia.

The public is now invited to participate in selecting the recipient of the 2026 Better World Project Award by casting their votes. Voting is open until 10 February 2026, at noon (PT), providing an opportunity to support a Malaysian innovation that continues to make a meaningful global impact.
