Overview

Our establishment was initially founded to spearhead research and development in cutting-edge domains encompassing physical sciences, information technology, and engineering. Over the years, we've undergone multiple phases of restructuring to ensure that our institute remains competitive and at the forefront of current research developments. In 2012, we shifted our primary focus to nanotechnology and advanced materials-based research.

After 22 years of establishment, on November 1, 2021, we embarked on a transformative journey by rebranding our institute as the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2). This rebranding, as ION2, represents a pivotal moment in our evolution, geared towards enhancing our visibility and empowering our institute. Our aspiration is to become a leading research centre of excellence, specialising in nanotechnology and advanced materials, with a particular emphasis on niche areas like nano-scale green synthesis and applications.

ION2 is committed to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable research and development, aligning with the future needs of both society and industry, especially in the context of Industrial Revolution 5.0 (IR5.0) and Society 5.0.

We also place a strong emphasis on achievements that support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (MySTIE) 10–10 framework. This approach is designed to ensure that our advancements in science and technology keep pace with the national economy while reducing dependence on foreign technology.

Our dedicated researchers at ION2 have achieved significant success by commercialising their products in collaboration with Putra Science Park under the Innohub program. Some of our notable products include organic conductive pastes for printable circuits, Nanoderm technology for treating oil palm diseases, copper-removing water filters, and a photosynthesis enhancer using carbon dots. The Institute consistently supports UPM's efforts to foster technopreneurs capable of developing new emerging technologies and creating innovations for the marketplace.

Beyond research and development, ION2 engages in various other essential activities, including the training of future research leaders through postgraduate programmes (Master and Doctor of Philosophy), the dissemination of research findings and expertise through publications and workshops/seminars, as well as networking initiatives with industry and the community. Additionally, we offer testing and calibration services, with two of our laboratories accredited with MS ISO/IEC 17025 by the Department of Standards Malaysia.
