Overview

The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), formerly known as the Institute of Advanced Technology (ITMA), is a premier research institute at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), established in November 1999. Initially founded to spearhead research and development in the fields of physical sciences, information technology, and engineering, the institute has undergone several phases of restructuring to remain competitive and responsive to emerging research trends. In 2012, the institute shifted its primary focus towards nanotechnology and advanced materials research, reflecting the growing importance of these fields in addressing global scientific and industrial challenges.

On 1 November 2021, after more than two decades of establishment, the institute embarked on a transformative journey by rebranding itself as the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2). This strategic rebranding marked a significant milestone in the institute’s evolution, aimed at enhancing its visibility, sharpening its research focus, and strengthening its position as a leading centre of excellence in nanoscience, nanotechnology, and advanced materials at both national and regional levels.

ION2 aspires to become a renowned research hub specialising in nanotechnology and advanced materials, with particular emphasis on niche areas such as nanoscale green synthesis and its practical applications. The institute also explores emerging frontiers within the broader discipline of nanoscience, while promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable research and development that addresses the future needs of society and industry.

In supporting national and global aspirations, ION2 actively contributes towards the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligns its research direction with the Malaysian Science, Technology, Innovation, and Economy (MySTIE) 10-10 framework. This approach ensures that advancements in science and technology contribute meaningfully to national economic growth while reducing dependence on foreign technologies.

The institute brings together researchers of international repute to lead three dedicated research laboratories that drive impactful and interdisciplinary research. ION2 actively contributes to the scientific community through high-impact publications, intellectual property creation, and the organisation of conferences, workshops, and seminars. At the same time, the institute nurtures future research leaders through its postgraduate programmes, namely the Master and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

In fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, ION2 empowers researchers to translate scientific discoveries into commercially viable technologies and intellectual property (IP). Through collaborations with Putra Science Park under the InnoHub Programme, several innovative products have been successfully commercialised, including carbon dot-based photosynthesis enhancers for agriculture, organic conductive pastes for printable electronic circuits, and graphene-based engine oil additives.

Beyond research and innovation, ION2 continues to strengthen its role as a hub for nanoscience and nanotechnology through strategic collaborations with industries and communities. The institute also offers comprehensive testing and calibration services, with two of its service laboratories accredited under MS ISO/IEC 17025 by the Department of Standards Malaysia, reflecting its commitment to quality, reliability, and excellence.
