ION2 Hosts International Guest Lecture on Green Magnetic Nanotechnology for Therapeutic Applications

Serdang, 10 February 2026 – The Laboratory of Nano Material Synthesis and Characterisation organised the International Guest Lecture Series 1/2026 at the Mega Putra Seminar Room, ION2. The session featured invited speaker Anindya Bose from the Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, Bhubaneswar. The lecture was attended by researchers from ION2 as well as members of the Fakulti Bioteknologi dan Sains Biomolekul.

In his lecture entitled “Green-Synthesized Magnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Therapeutic Applications”, he elaborated on the potential of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONPs) in biomedical applications. Owing to their nanoscale size, high surface area, chemical stability, biocompatibility, and superparamagnetic properties, these materials are promising for targeted drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, bioimaging, biosensing, and cancer diagnosis and therapy. He emphasised green synthesis approaches using plant extracts as sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional chemical methods.

The presentation highlighted three representative studies. First, nanoparticles synthesised using Triphala churna extract demonstrated enhanced antioxidant properties and cytotoxic activity against breast cancer cells. Second, a garlic-extract-mediated SPION-loaded chitosan nanohydrogel exhibited strong antibacterial performance and achieved approximately 95% wound contraction, indicating potential for wound management. Third, iron oxide nanoparticles synthesised using Cyperus rotundus root extract showed effectiveness against drug-resistant bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. These studies underscore the promise of ecofriendly nanoplatforms for cancer therapy, wound treatment, and antimicrobial applications.

Following the lecture, Prof. Bose visited the Nano Material Synthesis and Characterisation Laboratory II and the ION2 Analytical Laboratory. He was briefed on ongoing research by Dr. Ismayadi Ismail and toured major facilities including FESEM, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy systems. The visit is expected to serve as a starting point for future research collaboration.
