ION2 Hosts Successful Materials Characterization Workshop 2025

Serdang, 26 February 2025 – The Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), successfully hosted the Materials Characterization Workshop 2025: Exploring XRD and Raman Spectroscopy on 25–26 February 2025. The two-day event brought together researchers, academicians, and students from UPM and other institutions to enhance their knowledge of advanced materials characterization techniques.

The workshop opened with an in-depth session on X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), conducted by Dr. Low Yiin Jian, an application specialist at RGS Corporation Sdn Bhd. He is also ION2 alumnus. Dr. Low shared the principles and applications of XRD in materials science and emphasized XRD's role in structural analysis. In addition, a hands-on XRD demonstration session was held to allow the participants to observe the practical applications of the technique under Dr. Low’s expert guidance.

The second day of the workshop focused entirely on Raman spectroscopy, a pivotal technique for molecular characterisation. The session commenced with opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jaafar Abdullah, the Deputy Director of ION2.

The lecture for the Raman session was given by Dr. Nizam Tamcheck, a senior lecturer at UPM’s Department of Physics, Faculty of Science. His sharing includes a comprehensive overview of Raman Spectroscopy, explaining its significance in material composition analysis and structural characterisation. Similar to the XRD hands-on demo, the participants were also given the opportunity to watch a live Raman demonstration.

The Materials Characterization Workshop 2025 concluded with an interactive discussion, providing participants with the opportunity to engage with experts in the field and exchange insights. The event successfully provided exposure to advanced materials characterization techniques while facilitating engagement with experienced operators.
ION2 extends their gratitude to all speakers, participants, and organizers for their contributions in making the workshop a success.
