SERDANG, July 2023 - Functional Nanotechnology Device Laboratory (FNDL), Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2) has organized a two-day workshop entitled "Lateral Flow Assay for Disease Screening: Principle, Fabrication and Detection" on July 5 and 6, 2023.
This program aims to introduce the technology of lateral flow assay (LFA) which is a well-known diagnostic method technology for point-of-care (POC) testing because of its low cost and ease of use. Lateral Flow Testing is used to identify biomarkers in samples of urine, saliva, blood, plasma, etc. for diagnostic purposes. The simplest example is the use of LFA in test kits for COVID19, influenza and so on.
Realizing the extensive research potential in this technology, FNDL has organized the first of this series of workshops to introduce the technology and demonstrate suitable techniques for fabrication in a 'hands-on' session during the workshop. Prof. Dr. Nor Azah Yusof who is a professor at the Faculty of Science and also an ION2 Associate Researcher gave a lecture on the theory of this LFA technology, which was held online on the first day, followed by a practical session or "hands-on" in the preparation of LFA and the application of the technology which was held physically on the second day.
This workshop was attended by researchers from UPM and also from outside UPM such as from the International Islamic University (UIAM), the National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), the National Biotechnology Institute of Malaysia (NIBM), and Biogenes Technologies Sdn. . Bhd. Participants have given positive feedback on the organization of this workshop and hope that this workshop can be organized again in the future.
