Nanoscience Camp 2.0 Captures the Interest of 94 Selangor Students

SERDANG, 19 September – The Nanoscience Camp 2.0, organized by the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ION2) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in collaboration with the National Nanotechnology Centre (NNC) under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation Malaysia (MOSTI), was successfully held on 18 and 19 September 2024. This initiative, part of National Science Week 2024, highlights ION2's commitment to knowledge sharing and community engagement while supporting the national nanotechnology agenda.

A total of 94 Form 4 and Form 5 students from schools across Selangor participated in the camp, which was designed to introduce them to the captivating world of nanoscience and enhance their understanding of related topics in the subject of chemistry. The opening ceremony was officiated by Ts. Mohd Helme bin Mohd Helan, Acting Director of NNC, alongside key figures from ION2: Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid, the director, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jaafar Abdullah, the deputy director, accompanied by Mr. Md. Ali Rani, Program Director for Nanoscience Camp 2.0.

Participants enjoyed a variety of interactive activities that effectively bridged theoretical concepts with practical applications, providing insights into nanotechnology’s relevance in everyday life. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from students underscored the camp's impact in igniting curiosity and interest in the scientific field.

Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid emphasized the program's importance, stating, “I think we are doing something very valuable for our children. We hope this initiative will empower STEM and produce more local scientists in the future. The future of our nation as a technology creator lies in their hands.”

In recognition of the collaborative efforts, Ts. Mohd Helme summed up the program with a message of appreciation: “Thank you, Prof. and the ION2 team at UPM, for your cooperation in advancing the national nanotechnology agenda.”
