Statistical Data Analysis: Roles of Statistics in Scientific Research Course

SERDANG, Oktober 2021 – An online course entitled Statistical Data Analysis: Roles of Statistics in Scientific Research, organized by the Material Processing and Technology Laboratory (MPTL), was held on 6-7th October 2021. The seminar was conducted to familiarize researchers with statistics in research. There are many challenges in the research process that require solutions from every possible method. Statistics has been proven to offer an efficient analysis solution in various technology fields.

Hypothetically, statistics is ideal for problem-solving and steering new ideas to overcome research challenges. It is also helpful to help in composite materials formation that previously depended on the experimental result conducted by other researchers. Moreover, most experimental sample quantities and parameters are costly thus, the complex relationships among these parameters can be controlled with the help of statistical analysis design. Besides, statistics also help in the data analysis process and other processes involving different kinds of datasets.

The seminar's objectives were to give participants exposure to statistical analysis in research, train participants to adapt with a well-planned and systematic statistical analysis, and educate the use of statistical analysis in every research project planning and data analysis.

The course started at 9 am until 12.00 pm for two consecutive days and was facilitated by a Lecturer from the Department of Agriculture Science, Faculty of Agriculture, UPM, Dr. Mashitah Jusoh. The program received participants from UPM and outside UPM with a minimal entry fee of RM60 per person. A total of 68 participants have successfully joined the course. They learned how to use the statistical analysis program of the RStudio software pack. The module includes the data collection scenarios and types of statistical analysis suitable for the acquired data.

Participants were given opportunities to ask questions to the facilitator during the seminar. In addition, some sample files related to the course were also given to them. ITMA hopes to organize similar courses in the future, focusing on other statistical analysis methods other than using RStudio software.
